COP 30 at ºÚÁÏÍø

10 November - 21 November

ºÚÁÏÍø will be holding a series of events to demand climate action and highlight issues as world leaders meet at COP 30 in the Amazon rainforest region of Belem, Brazil, from 10-21 November.

The 11 days of events will start on Monday, 10 November, as Professor Mike Kagioglou, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Planning, Research and Innovation officially launches ºÚÁÏÍø @ COP 30 and the university’s £1.3 million National Lottery funded project to embed sustainability into deprived city communities.

Students and staff will also get the chance to take direct action on the climate, put forward ideas to improve sustainability at the university and honour those at ºÚÁÏÍø who have gone the extra mile at the prestigious ºÚÁÏÍø SDG Awards Night.

 

  1. Launch of LEAF and ºÚÁÏÍø @ COP 30 | Monday 10 November

    Official launch of the £1.3m National Lottery funded project to lead a major new community-driven climate initiative aimed at embedding sustainability in some of the city’s most deprived neighbourhoods. The three-year scheme, called Leicester Environmental Action and Future (LEAF), will bring together five grassroots organisations working with diverse communities across the city.

  2. SDG Awards Launch | Tuesday 11 November

    The official launch and call for nominations for the SDG Awards Night in early December. The categories this year have been revamped with the success of the SDG Fellows in mind and there will also be an announcement of a similar scheme for ºÚÁÏÍø students.

  3. Campus sustainability tour | Tuesday 11 November

    A free sustainability campus tour open to staff and students. The 45-minute tour will aim to highlight some of the hidden or overlooked initiatives on campus addressing sustainability and reducing the university’s carbon footprint. The tours will include information about the renewable energy technologies on campus, sustainable food projects, greener travel, and facts about the sustainable construction used in our buildings.

  4. Sustainable Finance and Investment | Wednesday 12 November

    Are you interested in learning more about sustainable finance and investment? Then drop in to the ºÚÁÏÍø Trading Floor, HU0.37. There will be leaflets and guides available for self-study, and we have two sessions where you can get an overview of shareholder activism, sustainability reporting, divestment strategies such as fossil fuel-free funds, and an introduction to Bloomberg certificates. There is no need to book – just turn up.

  5. 30 for 30 Project Launch | Wednesday 12 November

    Staff and students are being challenged to come up with 30 ideas to improve sustainability at ºÚÁÏÍø to mark COP 30…and the best idea or set of ideas will win a £100 gift voucher. The 30 shortlisted ideas will then be presented to university authorities for evaluation before deciding whether they can be implemented across the campus.

  6. Get your Green Fingers at ºÚÁÏÍø's Allotment | Wednesday 12 November

    Come along and develop your green fingers at ºÚÁÏ꿉۪s own allotment. Take part in planting activities to grow some winter vegetables. This event is open to all staff and students.

  7. Free breakfast for staff cyclists | Wednesday 12 November

    Staff can have a free breakfast as a thank you for choosing a low-carbon, sustainable way to travel to work. Just bring along your ID card and proof that you cycled into ºÚÁÏÍø (cycling equipment such as your bike helmet, or a photo with your bike). The Sustainability Team will also be able to provide some useful information initiatives such as free cycling equipment, Dr Bikes and Learn to Ride a Bike lessons for beginners.

  8. Civic Investment in Driving Sustainable Communities | Thursday 13 November

    Professor Rachel Granger leads this seminar on why civic investment is pivotal to developing sustainable communities. Increasingly, it is referring to the imaginative models, through which local people are empowered to become primary investors and stakeholders in a city’s development plans. Launching a report What Works in Civic Investment, this event will explore the role of local people as primary investors in community municipal investments, community bonds, impact investing, and crowdfunding, which are revolutionising urban renewal programmes.

  9. Digital Product Passport for Sustainable Practices | Thursday 13 November

    This seminar will explore how digital innovation can drive transparency, circularity, and sustainability across product life cycles. The session will discuss the shift from linear to non-linear (circular) economies, highlight current challenges in sustainable supply chains, and introduce the concept and processes of the Digital Product Passport (DPP). Drawing on recent research and a real-world use, the talk will discuss DPP adoption and outline key strategies and future directions for sustainable industry transformation.

  10. Student Movie Night: The Lorax | Thursday 13 November

    Students are invited to a FREE special movie night featuring The Lorax, the animated film inspired by Dr. Seuss’s timeless story about protecting the planet. This thought-provoking film explores key themes such as consumerism, responsibility, and the importance of protecting nature – the perfect watch in line with this year’s COP 30. Come along for an evening out with friends. Refreshments will be provided.

  11. Pizza for the Planet | Monday 17 November

    Hear about our environmental initiatives and how you can get involved while taking part in fun games with a sustainability theme. Meet new students and connect with those who share your interests. Also, there is free food ­– enjoy pizza while discovering how to help save the planet.

  12. Faith and Sustainability with ºÚÁÏÍø Prayer Room | Monday 17 November

    How do faith and sustainability link? Join us for a talk with the ºÚÁÏÍø Imam, Imam Mohammed Laher and The Sustainability team. Explore the connection between the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) and Islamic values such as supporting, avoiding waste and building a strong sense of community across diverse backgrounds. Participate in fun activities such as seed sowing, pot painting and a range of board games! There will also be refreshments provided. All students are welcome.

  13. A Picture of Poverty in Leicester | Tuesday 18 November

    A Picture of Poverty in Leicester - And What Can We Do About It? is a collaborative event exploring the widespread and complex issue of poverty in Leicester. ºÚÁÏÍø Engagement is working with Citizens Advice to present live data on poverty in the city, alongside personal stories and lived experiences from across sectors. The aim is to build a shared understanding of the challenges and to identify practical, collaborative actions we can take together.

    The event supports ºÚÁÏ꿉۪s work SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, by focusing on how we can make Leicester more inclusive and resilient.

  14. My City, My Impact | Wednesday 19 November

    This SDG 11 event is a student-led activity focused on urban sustainability involving all ºÚÁÏ꿉۪s partner universities around the world organised by TNE. This initiative encourages students to explore sustainability challenges in your city, share ideas, and collaborate with students across institutions. Work will be featured in a two-hour online session, celebrating youth voices and action for SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.

  16. Building Resilience in Communities | Wednesday 19 November

    Also part of the ºÚÁÏ꿉۪s Research and Innovation Festival, this talk by Dr Mark Charlton will share the progress of the SDG 11 Policy Research Project which explored challenges and ideas for Leicester as a sustainable city with community groups, local authorities and researchers. The event will be an opportunity to come together, reconnect and to share an overview of the research findings and further development plans for 2025/26, including some new funded roles for researchers and students.

  17. Sustainability for Managers | Wednesday 19 November

    ºÚÁÏÍø is the only higher education institution in the UK to be a global hub for sustainability. What does this mean and what should leaders and managers be aware of to ensure they meet the institutional requirements? Come along to find out what this means for you as a leader/manager and how you and your team can contribute to the SDGs; ºÚÁÏ꿉۪s strategic sustainability commitments and support ºÚÁÏ꿉۪s role as a global hub for SDG11: Sustainable cities and communities. This workshop is suitable for ALL categories of manager.

  19. Turning Waste into Art | Thursday 20 November

    An inspiring and creative event where students come together to turn waste into art is being staged by ºÚÁÏÍø Engagement and Trash to Art.

    Using recycled materials, students will collaborate to craft a large-scale artwork that celebrates sustainability and creativity. The finished piece will be proudly displayed on campus, showcasing ºÚÁÏ꿉۪s commitment to sustainability through creative expression.

  20. SDG Awards Night | Friday 5 December

    An event to celebrate all the work across ºÚÁÏÍø on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and mark one year since the launch of the SDG Fellows at the start of COP 29. Seven awards will be handed out for….

    • The SDG Project of the Year (all SDGs – three categories of best student project; best staff project; best civic project).
    • SDG 11 Project of the Year.
    • SDG Fellow of the Year (three categories – professional services; teaching; researchers/knowledge exchange).

    There is also a £100 gift voucher to be presented for the best idea to improve sustainability on campus from the 30 for 30 project.
